Dolch High-Frequency words represent 220 words that make up between 50 and 75 percent of all print in English. These words are foundational for reading, and explicit teaching is essential since many of them are irregular, and cannot be decoded with regular rules of English phonics.

Depending on your school districts policy (perhaps, like Clark County, that has its own lists) you will find that Dolch is generally considered the best set of high-frequency words. There is also the Fleish-Kincaid list, which is aligned to an evaluation form for those sight words.

The primer words follow the 'pre-primer' words and further build emerging readers ability to deal with text. When creating these worksheets, I was interested in creating worksheets that emerging readers could do without a lot of difficult to decode words. The sentences in these worksheets are almost 90 percent words from the pre-primer list. The subsequent worksheets (first through third grade) will use the previous levels words, assuming that children will master each list before they move on to the next.
More Instructional Strategies
These worksheets are designed to support instruction, not supplant it. They should be used to follow up instruction, and paired with other instructional strategies.
Create sentences together with a pocket chart, Print out the free printable flash cards, create lots of extra cards, and have your students dictate. It will provide your students with practice.
Read primer level books together. Your reading series will have a decodable book you can print out, and have students highlight high-frequency words you have put on the word wall. Reading A-Z offers a wide range of books to support instruction: you can even search by sight words. When you find the words you are working on, you can design small group instruction around the books.
Writing practice; provide templates that offer opportunities to use the new words. Perhaps you can create a writing page with the sight vocabulary you are working on, and place those words in a word bank, telling the students that they must use 3 of the 5 words, or . . . You can always generate writing by starting out with a model or a suggestion. Often with emerging writers, your goal is to get the pencil on the paper. Modeling, or writing together, is the first step. Providing sentence models, perhaps on sentence strips, is the next step. Finally, encouraging students to use the word wall and expand their writing from one sentence to three or four, will be the last steps.
Since readers who have mastered pre-primer words have emerging writing skills, as well. These worksheets provide lines for students to write the chosen cloze word in the context of the sentence.

Cloze reading is an instructional strategy where users are required to fill in the blanks within a passage with correct words from a word bank. Cloze reading is used to assess a student's understanding of vocabulary. STAR Reading is an online assessment program that embraces cloze reading passages. Many teachers create cloze reading passages to assess student vocabulary understanding within a particular story or passage or a group of spelling words. Cloze reading passages are easily created and can be adjusted to specific content and/or grade level.

Teachers can also have students create their own cloze reading passages as they read a story. This makes the learning more authentic. It also helps students find and make connections between key vocabulary within in the story and how their meaning enhances the story. Finally, students can exchange their cloze reading passages with other classmates. This naturally reinforces the critical components of the story including key vocabulary as students interact with each other and share what they created. This gives students ownership in the learning process.
Cloze Reading as a Study Tool
Cloze reading can also be used to help students study and prepare for a test. Students can be taught to create their own study guide using the cloze reading process. They can essentially build their own version of the test from their notes. As they put together the guide, it cements the content, makes the connections, and helps them remember it. Providing students with this skill will help them develop better study habits that can help them succeed throughout life. Most students struggle with test and quizzes because they do not know how to study. They simply read through their notes and call it studying. True studying is a much more rigorous and time-consuming process. Developing cloze reading passages that align to a test is one way to study more authentically.
